Abstract
1,250,610. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. 15 Jan., 1969 [31 Jan., 1968], No. 5021/68. Heading B3R. To produce a weld bead which is able to wet the surfaces of adjoining members to obtain adequate adherence and which is smooth for good fatigue strength, fusion welding is effected by energy from a laser in an atmosphere of inert gas, e.g. argon or helium, and sufficient free oxygen and/or carbon dioxide to reduce the surface tension of weld metal to a value less than that which would exist in a vacuum or a pure inert gas, whilst not introducing any unwanted metallurgical reaction with the weld metal. The amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide when present in the atmosphere are respectively not more than 10% and 20% by volume, and preferably each not less than 1% by volume.
