1,250,571. Welding by fusion; cutting by fusion. MESSER GRIESHEIM G.m.b.H. 15 Jan., 1969 [14 Feb., 1968], No. 2443/69. Headings B3R and B3V. In gas-shielded arc welding, or cutting, the shielding gas is obtained by evaporation of a liquefied mixture of argon and oxygen, the oxygen content of the mixture in a gaseous state being 5-25% by volume. Examples of 9-15, 9-10 and 13-15%, by volume, of oxygen content in the gaseous state are given respectively for best weld bead quality, best weld bead appearance and least pores. The shielding gas obtained from the mixture is particularly for use with consumable (e.g. tubular) electrodes. An example of wire electrode includes 0À4% Si, 1À0% Mn, by weight. The mixture in the gaseous state may additionally include up to 1%, by volume, nitrogen.
