An apparatus for wrapping objects in a sheet 11 of heat sealable material, e.g. polyolefin foil, comprises a stationary working frame 3, a table 2 which is vertically movable between guide bars 8 by a pneumatic motor 6 into the plane of the working frame 3, has suction openings formed in its surfaces, and serves to receive a support loaded with the object, or objects, to be wrapped, a stretching frame 4 for stretching the sheet 11 and which is pivoted at 10 for movement out of the plane of the working frame 3, and a heating device 5 arranged to be movable towards, and away from, the working frame with its plane parallel to that of the working frame 3 and in a direction perpendicular to the latter. An object to be wrapped can be prepared on a table 15 before being inserted in an admission opening 14 which can be subsequently closed by a guard plate 17 which, in its closed position, operates an on-off switch 18 by means of a push rod 19. A control box 23 automatically controls the wrapping operation. The heating device 5, connected to the working frame 3 by a parallelogram linkage 24, carries a screen flap 25, movable by a lever mechanism 26, and also a cutting device which comprises a spring-loaded lever 30, a guide roller 31, and a blade 31 which is adapted to slide along a channel 33 in the working frame 3 to sever the sheet 11. For varying the distance between the heating device 5 and the sheet 11 covering the object being packaged a lever 39, having an adjustable pivot 40, and which co-operates with an extension 41 on the parallelogram linkage 24, is movable by means of a pneumatic jack 37. The sheet 11 is fed from a roll to a position beneath the stretching frame 4. In a modification the heater (42) is carried by a vertically movable and rotatable pillar (43), Fig. 4, not shown.
