The main object of this invention is the provision of a manually operated machine in which the article to be Wrapped is inserted by hand and the wrapper ismanually placed in position to be folded about the article. A further object of the invention is the provision ofl manually operable means for drawing the web of wrapping material froma roll and severing a wrapper blank from the web, consisting of a handle connected through a gear train to a pair of coacting web-feeding rollers and also connected to a websevering knife so that the web will be drawn off the roll when the handle is depressed and severed the invention is to raise the article into the positioned wrapper, thus enfolding the article therein, and raise the enfolded article between tuckers which tuck the wrapper down over the ends of the article. For this purpose the lifter is connected toa treadle in such a manner that the lifter will be raised when the treadle is depressed by the attendant.
Another object of the invention is to advance 3:; the partially wrapped article from the lifter over la heated sealer table, which wipes the skirt of the wrapper-under the article and heat seals the bottom seam thus formed as the partially wrapped article is advanced thereover, and between stationary folders which fold in the end flaps of the wrapper then projecting from the article by means of a pusher -mounted on a manually movable slide. In order to complete the end folding operation with a single forward movement of the slide the same is provided with spaced end folders which fold the rear end flaps I of the wrapper over the top tuckers and carry lcams which raise the tuckers up from the partially wrapped article which is then advancedv .1.. between the stationary folders. A rod 33 attached to the bar 32 passes through an opening in the cross bar 3|, the opening being large enough to allow the rod to slide freely therein. A- handgrip 34 fastened to the rod 33 may be grasped by the attendant for actuating the pusher bar 32. A pair of brackets 35 suspended from the studs 38, and clamped against the bar 3| by nuts threaded thereon, support a guide plate 36.
A bottom folder 31 which forms the first underi'old of the wrapper about the article, is also mounted on the studs 38, the same being held between the bars 3| and 32. A pusher plate 38 attached to bar 32 advances the articles through their di'erent folding operations. Adjustably mounted on the pusher 38 in spaced relation are a set of channel-shaped clamp plates 39 carrying end folders 48, said folders operating to fold in the forward side flaps of the wrapper as will be presently described. To the clamp plates 39 are secured the angles 4|, the adjustably mounted cam rails 42, which when moved inward with the pusher 38 encounter rollers 43, thus raisingv the same and in so doing lifting the tuckers 44,
- which fold down the top flaps of the wrapper as its left hand portion, with the exception of the adjusting means, like members will `carry the same reference numbers.l
The upwardly extending arms 58 and 5| of the brackets 26 and 21 each carry agstationary cross bar 52 and a rack 53. The frames 48 are suspended from the members 52 and 53 by means of bolts 54 having wing nuts 55 engaging with the caps 56 disposed between the nuts 55 Vand the members 52 and 53. '.The frames 48 carry the folder plates 56a, the front edges of which fold in the projecting side flaps of the wrapper, andthe slots 51 therein receive the projecting bottom flaps of the wrapper, thereby gradually folding the same in over the flaps previouslyfolded against the ends of the article. The studs 59 carry springs 6| which are seated betweenthe straps 59 and the sealer plates 68; in this manner the sealer plates are yieldingly mounted so that they may accommodate themselves to any variation in the length of the articles. Each sealer plate 68 yis provided with an electric heater 82 which serves Y to heat the same suiciently for sealing together the flaps of the Wrapper overlapped on the ends of the article. A second pair of straps 63 attached to each of the frames 48 carries the cooling plates 64, the latter being yieldingly mounted in the same manner as the Sealers 60.
The side frames 20 and 2| have lugs 65 and A66 which support the bottom sealer table 61.
The table 61 is equipped with electricheaters 68 which heat the' same sufficiently for seali g the bottom seam of the wrapper. The fary end ofA the table 61 has a ledge 69 to which is fastened by a number of thumb screws 10 one end of the cooling table 1|, the other'end of table 1| resting on a cross bar 12. One end of the delivery table 13 rests on the bar 12, and it is attached to bars 14 which rest on the tie bar 24 and extend transversely thereof. The table 13 is provided with knobs 15 threaded onithe Stud-bolts 16 which pass through the table 13 'and are threaded into the lock members 11 provided with ledges 18 extendinglunder the bar 12. Therefore, when the knobs are tightened on the studbolts 16, the table 13 is clamped'aganst the top of bar 12 and the ledges 18 are pressed against the bottom on the bar 12, thus assuring a rigid mounting for the table.
All the folding members on the frame 48 shown a't the left hand portion of Fig. 2 are set correctly at assembly and need not be moved. To accommodate different lengths of articles, the frame 48 shown at the right hand portion of Fig. 2 is made adjustable. The latter frame 48 carries bearings 48a supporting a shaft 49a, one end of said shaft carrying a hand wheel 58a. A pair of pinions 5|a mounted on shaft 49a mesh with the stationary racks 53. To adjust this frame-48 the wing nuts 55 thereof are loosened and then, by turning the hand wheel 58a, theentire frame 48 with the folder members carried thereon may be shifted to the desired position.
The tie bar 25- supports a yoke 19 carrying a stud 88 on which is fulcrumed at treadle 8|, the other end of the treadle carrying a pad 82. 'I'he treadle 8| is guidedx in a slotted bar 83 suspended f romv the tie frame 23 and carries av screw 84 to which is secured one end of a cable 85, the other end of cable 85 being fixed in a recess in the periphery of pulley 86. A pulley 81 which is coaxial with the pulley 86has a recess which is diametrically opposite to the recess in pulley 86.` In the recess inthe periphery of pulley 83 is held one end of a cable 88, the other end of cable 88 being looped under the head of a screw 89 threaded into the lifter bar 90.

.pulley 86 is turned by means of the cable 85 and the pulley 81, which may be integral with or `fast to pulley 86, is turned With the pulley 86 causing the cable 88 to be wound on the pul- The pulleys 86 and 81 are free to revolve on a stud 9| set in the bar 83. The bar 98 also supports a dash pot 92, the bore of pot 92 fitting a stationary bar 90, is free of the piston 93 when the lifter bar is'released, and as it drops the piston 93 enters its bore thus cushioning the impact of the lifter bar.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, the tie frame 22 is provided with a transverse slot which, together with a recess in a cap 94 attached to the frame 22, guides the lifter bar 90. The bar 90 carries a head 95; attached to the ends of head 95 are brackets 96 which carry guide rods-91 sliding in bores in the lugs 98 of the tie frame 22.' In transverse holes of the brackets 96 are adjustably mounted the pins 91a which are held therein by set screws (Fig. 4) and on which are supported blocks 98a. The channel 99 and angle |00 extending crosswise between the blocks 98a' and brackets 96, respectively, form the platform for the articles. The vertical flange of angle |00 serves as a side wall or stop for the articles. In lugs 98 of the frame 22 are supported a pair of cross rods |02 on which are adjustably mounted a pairA of holders |03 in which are xed the vertical guide rods |04. Holders |03 are clamped to one of the rods'l02 by set screws, the rods |04 being placed so that they fit in the space between the channel 99 and angle |00.
An arm |05 attached to a stud |06 pvotally mounted in a bearing |01 of side frame 20, actuates a lever |08 fast on stud |06. The other end of lever |08 carries a stud |09 on which is pivotally mounted a bar ||0. The end of bar ||0 is provided with a latch which is arranged to engage under the steps ||2 and ||3 of a notch in lifter bar 98.y A spring ||4 stretched between posts I |5 and ||6 of the bar I0 and tie frame 22 respectively, tends to hold the latch against the notched side of the lifter bar 90. When the bar 90 is lifted it will readily be seen that the tension of the spring ||4 will move the latch into engagement with the steps I3 and I |2.
Referring again to Fig. 2, when the hand-grip 34 is moved. inwardly, the members assembled on the slide bars 28 andv 29 travel along until the collars ||1 mounted on bars 28 and 29 meet the bearing lugs IIB of brackets 26 and 21. Up to this time the compression of springs ||9 on the rods 2B and 29, which are interposed between the slidably mounted U-bars and adjustably mounted collars |2|, has been great enough to keep pressed together on 'the bars 26 and 29 the members 3|, 36 and 31 mounted thereon. The described movement of the bars 20 and'29 moves the cams |22 and |23 on one of the bars |20 past the roller |24, thus operating the arm |05 (Figs.
3 and 4). The upper cam |22 is adjustably at.
tached while the'lower cam |23 is fixedly attached to the bar |20, whereby the desired cam contour may be obtained by adjustment of the cam |22.
Referring to Fig. 5 the web feed mechanism consists of the pedestals |25 and |26 supporting cross shafts 21, 29 and |29 and the front pedestal |25 is provided with studs |3| and |32. The pedestals |25 and |26 are adjustably mounted on the bars |33 and |34 connecting the frames 20 and 2|. A pair of studs |35 and |36 set in eachl of the pedestals |25 and |26 carry rollers resting on the top of the bars |33 and |34, and cross rods |31 connecting the pedestals bear'against the bottom of bars |33 and |34. A handle |38 loosely mounted on stud |3| actuates an arm |39 loose on stud |3|,.the handle being provided with adjusting screws |6| bearing against a lug on the arm |39. The free end of arm |39 carries a stud |40 operating in the slotted head |4| of a connecting rod |42 pinned to arm |44. The shaft |28 also carries a feed roller |5| while the shaft |30 is equipped with a number of spaced rubber feed rollers |52 coacting with roller |5| to feed t-he web of wrapping material.' The shaft |30 is' mounted in a swingable arm |53 pivoting on a shaft |54 mounted in thepedestals |25 and |26. At its other end arm |53 is equipped with a transverse lug |55 by means of which the same may be manually depressed thus lifting the feed rollers |52 out of engagement with the roller |5|, this being only done when anew wrapper web is l to be threaded between the feed rollers, or if the wrapper web should become jammed betweenthe feed rollers. During normal operation the arm |53 is held securely to the shaft |54 by means of a set screw |56. As said feed rollers. rotate they unwind the web W from a reel R of suitable wrapping material, such as waxed paper, etc., which is mounted on a shaft |51 (Fig. 1) supported on the bars |33, |34. The leading end of the wrapper Aweb is guided over a bridge |56, and over the Wires |59, which are held taut by weights |60, into position to be severed.
By means of the adjusting screws |6| handle |39 may be set at a convenient position for operation. When handle |36 is depressed, arm |39 actuates, through the rod |42' connecting the latter to the arm |44, the segment |45 which through the gear train |46| 50 turns the feed rollers |5| and |52, thus advancing the wrapper web W a predetermined distance 'equal to the required length of material for wrapping the article. The arm |39 stops against an adjustable stop screw |6|a threaded into a lug of frame |25, and the stop screw may be set to regulate thelv throw of said arm, in this manner providing means for regulating the length of the wrapper. When the handle ,|39 is returned to its neutral position as shown in Fig. 5 the arm |44 stops v against a set screw |62.
When the wrapper is to be cut the handle |38 is rst raised from its neutral position, thus bringing the adjusting screw |63 into engagement with the tail |64 of the arm |65 clamped when raised engages with a ledger plate |10 and severs the wrapper from the web W. During theV cutting operation the stud |40 in arm |39 moves freely in the slot of head |4|.
A portion of each of the bars |33 and |34 is provided withl gear teeth |1|`with which mesh the gear |12 mounted near the ends of cross shaft |13 journaled in pedestals |25, |26. The shaft |13has a hand wheel |14 by which it canv be turned to move the entire Webfeed unit for adjusting the distance between the knife |68 and the bight of the feed rollerswhen it is desi red to changeV the lengthof the wrapper.
'I he operations by,which the severed wrapper is folded about the loaf of bread or package -will now be described. The severed wrapper is drawn over the cross bar |15 manually and positioned 75 so that it rests on the cross bar |15 and the plate 36. The 1loaves or packages A to be wrapped are placed on the platform |16, Fig. 6 wherein they may be advanced by the attendant until the leading loaf stops against the side wall |l. With the loaf thus positioned on the lifter platform 99-|00, the lifter is raised by depressing the treadle 8|, Fig. 1. The loaf A on being raised to position A', Fig. 7, encounters the wrapper W and the same is thus draped about three sides of the loaf. While the loaf is being raised to this position, the' tuckers encounter the top flaps of the wrapper and'tuck the same down against the ends of the loaf. The stationary rods |04 guide the loaf until it has entered between the tuckers 44. A tension plate |11 carried by rods slidably mounted in a bracket supported on the front cross bar 52 and rack 53 holds the wrapper W, Fig. 7, against the top of the loaf, and remains in contact with the same until the bottom folds of the wrapper have been completed.
The lifter bar El!! upon being raised permits the* latch lli of arm H0 lto engage under the step I|2 ofthe notch in bar 90, Fig. 4. In this position the bottom of the loaf A is slightly higher than the bottom folder plate 31, Fig. 8, -so that when the handle 34 is moved inward by the attendant the plate 31 may move under the loaf and start to fold the hanging end of the wrapper under the bottom of the loaf. The continued advance of the plate 31 moves the cam |22` |23 (Figs 2, 3 and 4) against the roller |24, thus moving the arm which actuates the lever |08. The movement of lever 08 causesthe arm ||0 to release the'latch |I| from its engagement with step H2, and the bar 90 drops until the latch IH engages under the lstep H3.
Referring now to Fig. 9, the loaf A' Vis shown bar 90 to drop and return the platform 99|00 to its original position, Fig. 11. At this point the continued inward movement of the handgrip 34 by the attendant brings the folders 40 into engagement with thev side flaps of the wrapper and folds them over the top tuckers 44.
Referring once more to Fig. 2, the advance of bottom folder 31 is stopped when the collars I I1 mounted on the slide bars 26 and 29 meet the bearing lugs H8 of the'brackets 26 and 21. The collars ||1 are so set that they will stop the advance of the plate 31 when it reaches a position slightly spaced from the bottom folder table 61, Fig. 11, and as the attendant continues pushing the handle 34 inward the force exerted on the pusher 36 overcomes the tension of the` springs H9, Fig. 2, .thus sliding the pusher on the bars 28 and 29 and bringing it against the loaf and moving the cam rails 42 under the rollers 43, thereby causing the folders 44 to be swung up above theV now advancing loaf, Fig. 12.. During the further advance of loaf A', Fig. 13, the skirt of the wrapper is folded under the bottom of the loaf by the front edge of the sealer table 61. 'I'he front side flaps of the wrapper are folded back against the previously folded flaps by the folder plates 56a.-A 'Ihe wrapped loaf A' at this enter the slots 51 of the'folder plates 56a and are gradually folded up against the ends of the package. A top tension plate |18 supported from the front cross bar 52 and rack 53 vby a hinge holds the packages down on the sealer table 61 while they are forwarded between the folder plates 56a, sealer plates 60, and cooling plates 64, thus assuring a. perfect bottom seal. It may be noted that the packages are advanced step by step between the sealing and cooling plates by means of the packages subsequently pushed between the folder plates 56a, until the completely wrapped and sealed packages reach Athe delivery table 13. 'Ihe finished package arriving on the delivery table 13 has the appearance shown in Fig. 14.

A wrapping machine of the class described: comprising in combination a support for a supply roll of wrapping material in web form; means operable manually at will to withdraw and sever therefrom a wrapping'sheet and to position said sheet at a station provided with wrapping devices; a lifter adapted to receive an article to be wrapped and operable manually at will to advance said article upward into said wrapping station, thereby draping said article with the sheet; and means to transfer said draped article manually at will from said wrapping station to a station provided with sealing devices; and means actuated duringI and by virtue of, said transfer to effect a further wrapping operation upon said sheet.
20. A wrapping machine of the class described:
comprising in combination a support for a. supply 75 roll of wrapping material in web form; means operable manually at will to withdraw and sever therefrom a wrapping sheet and to position said sheet at a station provided with Wrapping devices; a lifter adapted to receive an article to be wrapped and operable manually at will to advance said article upward into said wrapping station, thereby draping said article with the sheet, and causing said wrapping devicesto be' come effective; means to transfer said draped non to a station rprovided with sealing devices; 1 l' means actuated during, and by virtue of, said transfer, to eiect af further wrapping operation lupon said sheet and to Amake said sealing devices eiective; said means co-operating to discharge said' wrapped, sealed article from said sealing station.
