Abstract
1,250,343. Recovery of solvents from extracts by steam distillation. ROSE, DOWNS & THOMPSON Ltd. 5 Dec., 1969 [5 Dec., 1968], No. 57794/68. Heading B1B. [Also in Division C5] In a process for the separation of solvent from a mixture of oil and solvent by steam stripping followed by condensation, residual solvent vapour is absorbed in oil removed from the stripping stage, and the solution of solvent in oil is recycled to the stripping stage. Solvent, such as hexane, is used to extract oil from vegetable seed in extractor 12, which is maintained at slightly below atmospheric pressure; and the solution of oil in solvent is received in tank 15 whence it is pumped through conduit 17 and heater 25 to evaporator 26 where the solution is contacted with steam, the effluent vapours of solvent and steam being passed to atmospheric condenser 27. The solution of solvent in oil withdrawn from the separator at the top of evaporator 26, is stripped with steam in column 28, which is operated under partial vacuum, and the vapours are passed to condenser 27. Some of the oil withdrawn from the base of column 28 is withdrawn from the system. The condensate from condenser 27 flows to tank 31 where water is separated from solvent. Water contaminated with solvent is drawn off to boiler 33, whence the vapours are passed to condenser 27, and waste water is discharged. A mixture of solvent vapour, water vapour and air is drawn from extractor 12, condenser 27 and tank 21 via conduit 22 into condenser 35, whence the residual gaseous mixture flows to column 36 where it is scrubbed with some of the oil pumped from the bottom of stripping column 28 via cooler 37. Air is withdrawn from the top of column 36 by pump 39. Some of the solution of solvent in oil, withdrawn from the base of column 36, is recycled to this column through heater 42, and the remainder of the solution is passed through heater 40 to the top of column 28. Spent seed, discharged from extractor 12, is treated with steam in desolventiser 19; and the mixture of solvent vapour and air is scrubbed with liquid solvent in scrubber 20 before being passed to condenser 27. The solvent recovery process can also be applied in the extraction of oils from animal bones, and in the refining of lubricating oils.
