Abstract

1,249,960. Adapter for couplings. AMSTED INDUSTRIES Inc. 10 Aug., 1970 [2 Oct., 1969], No. 38389/70. Heading B7T. In an adapter unit to convert a freight car having a striker casting to receive a spring- supported coupler carrier and an AAR Type F interlocking coupler into a car having an unsprung coupler carrier to receive a non-interlocking rotary coupler, an adapter casting 44 is located in a carrier portion 16 of a striker casting 14 by retainers 66 whose ends are contained within apertures 67 in the sides of the striker casting 14. Associated with the adapter casting 44 is a saddle casting 58 having a concave surface 60 to receive the cylindrical portion of a coupler shank 22 and a T-shaped protuberance 62 to lock the saddle casting 58 to the adapter casting 44 by engaging a slot 52 in the latter. The rear end 40 of coupler shank 22 is located by a pin 42 in a collar 38 which is rotatably mounted in a pocket 32 in a yoke 26 of the draught gear.
