Abstract
1,249,944. Rotary pumps. BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORP. Oct. 6, 1969 [Oct. 28, 1968], No.48921/69. Heading F1F. To vary pump displacement of a rotary sliding vane pump of twin abutment type operating at very high speeds, e.g., 20, 000 R.P.M. the cam ring 301, Figs. 1, 2, comprises a plurality of thin flexible members 303 and intervening diametrically oppositely disposed pairs of blocks 309, 311 bonded to the flexible members. Intermediate the blocks the flexible members are free to slide with respect to each other. On its face remote from the vane tips each block is formed with a wedge surface with the wedge surfaces on one pair 309, 309, being oppositely directed as compared with the surfaces on the other pair 311, 311. Wedges 343 sliding on the blocks 309 and wedges 347 sliding on the blocks 311 are connected by rods 371 and nuts and washers to a control member 375 having a collar portion 380 slidable with respect to a spindle 381 secured to the pump housing. Each block 309, 311 is urged away from the vane tips by means of a spring 361, spring-abutment 357 and a rod 353. On rotation of a control nut 393 one pair of wedges are moved so that the associated blocks are moved radially inwards against the tension of the spring 361 and the other pair are moved so that the associated blocks move radially outwards under the influence of the springs to alter the once circular cam surface to an elliptical shape to vary the pump displacement from zero to any desired value up to its maximum. A plurality of slots 321 are cut through the flexible member 303 to provide openings for the inlet and discharge of fluid to and from the pumping chambers. Depending on the direction of rotation of the control nut 393 flow through the pump can be in one or other direction. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the blocks are moved hydraulically.
