Abstract
1,249,541. Stripping cigarettes. IMPERIAL TOBACCO GROUP Ltd. 26 Aug., 1970 [30 Aug., 1969, No. 43262/69. Heading A2C. Cigarettes C are rolled under compression by a pair of contra-rotating converging conveyer belts 15, 20 to convert at least a surface layer of the tobacco therein into a substantially granular form, and then fed via a shoot 13 into a rotating cylindrical wire mesh sieve 14 where the tobacco escapes endwise from the unbroken cigarette wrappers. The recovered tobacco passes through the sieve 14 onto a vibrator conveyer 34, and the emptied cigarette wrappers, together with filter stubs if any, pass out of the outlet 35 of the sieve 14 optionally aided by suction. Unless the moisture content of the tobacco in the cigaretes C is sufficiently low, i.e. below 12%, for the tobacco to crumble when rolled, the cigarettes are passed through a drier 10 before rolling. In an alternative arrangement, either the upper belt is held immovable or it is replaced by a stationary plate. In a further arrangement, suitable only for filter tip cigarettes, the conveyer belts are driven about vertical rollers and the cigarettes are compressed whilst in a vertical attitude with their filters uppermost so that the crumbled tobacco drops down endwise out of the wrappers into a collector below and no separator is required.
