Abstract

124,906. Fernandez, A. April 10, 1918. Thermal c u t - outs. - A thermal cut-out which operates by the expansion of a wire to release the latching- device is set by a longitudinal movement of a handle, and the circuit can be m a n u a l l y opened, while the cut-out remains set, by the rotation and consequential longitudinal movement of the handle. The movable contact members 4, 5 consist of springs mounted in lugs on the base 1, and a contact 19 mounted on a spring 16 and adapted to engage a spring contact 24. The handle 9, Figs. 1 and 4, is mounted in a bracket 8 on the base. The bracket 8 also supports a resilient conducting member 10 adapted to hold a spring member 16 in its operated position. A hook 11 on the member 10 is connected by a conducting-wire 12, Figs. 1 and 9, to an adjustable hook 13 connected by a member 21 to the contact 19. The members 5, 16 are connected by an insulated bolt 39. To close the cut-out, the handle 9 is pushed until the member 10 engages the underside of the spring 16, when the contact 19 engages the contact 24 and the contact member 5 engages a contact member 27, Figs. 1 and 6. The circuit will then be completed as follows : Lead 7', members 5, 27, to lead 30; and lead 7, member 4, bracket 8, member 10, wire 12, member 21, contacts 19, 24, to lead 25. When the current through the wire 12 exceeds a predetermined value, the wire 12 expands sufficiently to allow the member 10 to disengage from the member 16, and the cut-out operates to open the circuit. To open the circuit when the cut-out is set, the handle 9 is rotated to cause a projection 38 thereon to engage a cam-surface 37 on the base 1, thereby producing a longitudinal movement of the handle 9 and causing the contact member 4 to disengage from the bracket 8, thereby breaking contact between the leads 7, 25. A cord 31, Figs. 1 and 6, is secured to the handle 9, and as the handle is rotated, it moves the contact 27 from the member 5 against the action of a spring 29, thereby disconnecting the lead 7<1> from the lead 30.
