Abstract
864,967. Thermal switches. CONTACTOR (PROPRIETARY) Ltd. March 13, 1959 [June 10, 1958], No. 8832/59. Class 38 (5). A cut-out for an immersion type resistance heater element, e.g. for an electric kettle, comprises contacts 19, 20 which are normally held closed against the bias of a spring 18 tending to move contact 19 downwards to the dotted position by an adjustable nut 14 on a rod 11 secured at 12 to a sleeve 10 clamped at 9 to the heater 1. The sleeve 10 is fixed at 15 to the sheath 2 of the heater and is formed from brass, the rod 11 having a relatively low expansion. A spring 26 arranged between the nut 14 and the end of the sleeve 10 is bowed outwardly to the left on lowering of the nut 14 due to expansion of the sleeve 10 due to overheating, and the end of the spring 18 is forced out from under the nut to allow the contacts to open. The downward movement of contact 20 is limited by a stop 21a and the contacts are reclosed by depressing a plunger 23 when the sleeve 10 has cooled.
