Abstract
1,197,639. Thermal switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 Nov., 1968 [8 Nov., 1967], No. 50864/67. Heading H1N. In a thermally operable switch having a snap-action trifurcated blade 3 actuated by an electrically heated bimetal 1a through an intermediate lever 4, the lever 4 has a spring extension 4a which deflects in the event of a contact weld and engages a lever 5 attached to the blade 3 in the region of the contacts 3a, 8 to shear the contacts apart. The lever 4 is riveted to the end 3g of a cross-piece of the blade 3 which engages notched bollard 7. A projection 4b on the lever 4 presses downwards on the blade 3 to open the contacts for normal snap-action across the notch 9a in which the central compression leg 3f of the blade 3 rests. The bimetal 1a is U-section in plan with a second compensating arm (not shown). It may comprise bent-up sheet member with an arm 1c pivoted at groove 6 of the base or may comprise a pair of bimetal cantilever arms attached to a pivoted rod.
