Abstract

1,248,901. Buoys. E.M.I. Ltd. 18 Nov., 1968 [19 Aug., 1967; 31 Jan., 1968], Nos. 38318/67 and 4906/68. Heading B7A. [Also in Division G1] An oceanographic survey device 1 to measure and record submarine pressure, temperature and conductivity (see Heading G1N) comprises an anchor 2 and a buoy 3. The buoy includes a buoyant chamber 10 divided into upper and lower compartments by a bulkhead 11 and a hermetically sealing cover 14. Inside the former are carried measuring and recording instruments and a motor control circuit 12 while a battery 13 is mounted inside the latter. At the lower external end of the buoy is a freeflooding fairing 21 enclosing an electric motor 18, winch 17 and gear train 19, a mooring cable 4 being guided and supported by a fairlead 22. The dead-weight anchor produces a net anchoring force of 70-90 pounds and comprises a steel hemisphere in which is a winch drum 25, on bearings 24, carrying a mooring cable 4 which is guided by a fairlead 26. Prior to launching the fairleads 22, 26 are maintained in contact by a manacle 28 kept in tension by three struts 29. The manacle 28 is released at a desired depth by a pressure-sensitive plunger (not shown) when the struts fall free, the anchor sinks to the sea bed and the buoy floats at a depth of about 100 metres. The buoy is driven upwards once daily to a depth of 5 metres and returned again to its mooring station by the control circuits; measurements and recordings being made the while it moves.
