Abstract

1525422 Hydrophone arrays SANDERS ASSOCIATES Inc 4 May 1976 18180/76 Heading G1G [Also in Division B7] A hydrophone array system comprises a plurality of hydrophones 34 on a cable 37, a buoyant body 22 with a transmitter 45, a cable 24 from the body 22 and connected with the cable 37 to a thruster 27 to urge the cable 37 in one direction, a member, e.g. a drogue 26, to resist the urging of the thruster and means to conduct signals from the hydrophones to the transmitter. In operation the system is dropped from an aircraft or over the side of a ship, and the buoyancy of the arrangement is such that the cable 37 is maintained in a horizontal position, with the thruster keeping the array taut in a current, or moving the array over a predetermined survey pattern. In Fig. 9 (not shown), the drogue is replaced by a buoyant below-surface body (51) connected to a seabed anchor (53). The arrangement in Fig. 10 (not shown), includes a buoy (61) connected to the drogue 60. In Figs. 11 and 12, (not shown), the drogue is replaced by a weight (65) connected to the buoyant body 22. The embodiments of Figs 13-20, (not shown), describe a system which can be remotely controlled from an aircraft and recovered after use, having an elastic suspension link (88) to help orientate the system housing (71), and isolate it from wave induced motion.
