Dry powder fire extinguishing compositions comprise the material manufactured and sold by I.C.I, under the R.T.M. "Monnex" as defined below and as described in their Technical Service Note No. TS/2283 dated May, 1968 and at least one other active fire extinguishing material. "Monnex" is defined by the following properties:- Specific gravity 1.8 112lbs/ft<SP>3</SP> Bulk density of powder 0.8-1.2 gm/cc 50-75 lbs/ft<SP>3</SP> Particle size:-Median 35-45 microns Distribution 90% less than 80 microns 10% less than 20 microns It is readily soluble in cold water to give a mildly alkaline solution and insoluble in organic solvents. The other fire extinguishant may be ammonium bicarbonate, phosphates or sulphate, potassium sulphate, sodium phosphate or chloride, a borate or boric acid, polyvinyl chloride, starch or another polysaccharide, protein or a protein derivative. Known additives e.g. talc, mica, metal stearates, barium sulphate, calcium phosphate, silicates, and powdered asbestos may be included. Preferred amounts are 5-80% by wt. "Monnex", 5-95% other active ingredients, and 0-30% additives.
