Abstract
1,247,131. Casting composite articles. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 31 March, 1970 [1 April, 1969], No. 15040/70. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] In order to establish a good contact surface on a body of cast aluminium a bimetal 8 comprising a surface layer of copper, silver or both and a base layer of aluminium is embedded in the body during casting. The bimetallic material may be formed by hot rolling. The aluminium should be of industrial grade (99À5% pure) to ensure that the casting operation does not destroy the bond between the layers of the bimetal. Where the bimetal is copper-aluminium the surface may be silvered after machining flat. The arrangement may provide the abutting surfaces of a switch (Fig. 1, not shown) or as shown a permanent connection between relatively movable parts. The bimetal 8 is embedded in a fixed body 5 of cast aluminium and connection is made between it and a sliding switch contact 6 by resiliently mounted copper blades 9. The join between the surfaces of members 5, 8 may be filled with varnish to prevent ingress of moisture.
