[Also in Division C2] The invention comprises basic monoazo dyes, free from acidic water-solubilizing groups, of formula wherein D is a diazo component residue, A is an arylcarbonylamino, alkoxycarbonylamino, alkyl- or aryl-sulphonylamino, ureido, triazinylamino group or an acylamino group derived from a heterocyclic carboxylic acid, Y is an aliphatic carbon chain, R 1 , R<SP>1</SP> and R 2 are H, alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl, R is alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl, R 3 is alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl, X is an anion, n is 1 or 2 and N, R 1 and R 2 or R 3 may form a heterocyclic ring. The dyes are prepared by azo coupling using suitable components, by reacting dyes containing a halogen atom or ester group linked to Y with an amine, by reacting aminoazo dyes with halo- or estersubstituted alkylamines or by treating an amino-alkylamino-azo dye with a compound R 3 X. The dyes may be used to colour synthetic fibres, in particular polyacrylonitrile and polyester fibres in red and blue shades.
