Heading C2C. d-Trans-pyrethic acid is prepared by reacting 3,3-dimethyl-2-(R). formyl - 1 - (R) - cyclopropane carboxylic acid with a Wittig reagent which in the presence of a strong basic agent yields a carbanion of partial formula The reagent is preferably a substituted phosphonate of in which R represents an alkyl (1-12 C) radical, and other phosphonium salts, phosphine oxides and phosphinic esters are mentioned. The reaction may be performed in an anhydrous organic solvent in the presence of a strong basic agent. Salts of the acid particularly alkali metal salts, the salt of L(+)- or D(-) - threo - 1 - p - nitrophenyl - 2 - N,N - dimethylaminopropane - 1,3 - diol or the salt of 1-quinine may be prepared.
