Abstract

1,246,806. Textile treating apparatus. BURLINGTON INDUSTRIES Inc. 12 Aug., 1968 [6 Sept., 1967; 23 July, 1968 (2)], No. 38500/68. Heading D1L. In a process for treating textile material the material is initially vacuum degassed at a pressure between zero and 10 inches of mercury absolute, and then immediately treated with a fluid treating agent on leaving the vacuum degassing zone, for dyeing, scouring, resin treating or mercerising, whereby the penetration and pick-up of the treating agent by the material is increased, the entrance and exit of the evacuating zone being sealed to maintain evacuation and prevent entry of the treating fluid into the zone. In one embodiment a continuous length of material 10 is passed vertically through an evacuated chamber 4 having entry and exit sealing rolls 12, 14. The material is preferably exposed to a vacuum of 0.6 to 3.5 inch mercury absolute for from 1 to 15 seconds. On being withdrawn from the vacuum chamber 4 the material is immediately passed through the treating liquid 20 located in the nip of the upper sealing rolls 14, and thence between padder rolls 22. The pressure between the sealing rolls 12 or 14 is adjustable by moving one roll relative to the other. In alternative embodiments the treating liquid is located in a separate chamber immediately adjacent the exit from the vacuum chamber and the seals of the vacuum chamber may be cooperating rubber flaps or inflated non- rotating tubular members. To further improve the penetration and pick-up of the material it may be heated during its passage through vacuum chamber to from 50‹ to 150‹C such as by infra-red or dielectric heaters or by passage over heated rollers. Also the material may be passed through the vacuum chamber zig-zag fashion over rollers, and the vacuum chamber may be horizontally arranged or may be spherical. In yet a further embodiment the vacuum treatment is carried out at 0‹C. In an alternative embodiment the continuous length of material is first passed through an additional treating agent 50, then vacuum chamber 4 (Fig. 10) in a zig-zag manner during which it is heated by heaters 55, and is then passed through the main treating chamber 59. The treating agent may be a liquid or a gas. Several specific examples are given.
