Abstract

1,246,605. Solenoid electromagnets. DETROIT COIL CO. 2 March, 1970, No. 9906/70. Heading H1P. An industrial solenoid comprises a soft iron laminated C-shaped stator 10 into which fits a wound coilunit 60 and a laminated reciprocating T-armature 80 attractible to the stator by the coil field through aligned passage 63 of the coil and a slot 18 separating the stator poles. Sideplates 26 are riveted to the stator and are apertured in correspondence therewith, while a central hole of the bight of the stack contains a push-rod bush, which is retained by an integral flange between a base-plate 34 extended into feet 46, and the base of the stator 10, which flange fits into a resilient cushioning pad (Fig. 2, not shown) which is itself retained between the base of the stator and base-plate 34; to which the stator is retained by spring strap 36 whose turned over ends locate in grooves of the pole faces 17, 19. The coil unit 60 comprises nylon bobbin 62 and winding 64 within axial flanges 66, 68; with upwardly extending walls 72, 74 forming a rectangular skirt surrounding the passage 63 and extending into the slot 18 separating the polepieces, while risers 78 space the unit from the underside of the polepieces. The extensions 52 of side-plates 26 slidably retain a plastic back stop-plate 90, and are notched at 58 to engage an upstanding portion 114 of shock-absorber pads 110 carried in cavities 104 on each side of the stop-plate, and compressed against the lips 54 of the extensions 52. The bight of the stop-plate is apertured at 96, and its underside is channelled to receive the head 84 of the armature. On energization of the coil, the letter descends to operate the push-rod and its head strikes the stator polefaces; the shock being absorbed by the underlying cushioning pad, while on de-energization it is returned by a spring (not shown) operating on the pushrod against the backstop plate, which being yieldable against pads 110 absorbs the impact. In modifications (Figs. 4 to 8, not shown) the side plates, backstop plate, and cushioning differ in detail.
