A temperature responsive actuator comprises a temperature sensing bulb 28 connected by a conduit 26 to a housing 16 containing a bellows 14, the base 12 of the bellows forming a wall which is movable to operate the actuator, and the actuator containing a medium which at the intended working temperature has a vapour pressure below ambient atmospheric pressure, with a spring 32 acting on the base 12 to assist the vapour pressure of the medium, the two working against atmospheric pressure acting on the inside of the bellows 14, and the arrangement being such that if a leak occurs in the actuator, the effect will be that the spring 32 will contract the bellows since the pressure on both sides of the base 12 will be the same. This gives a "fail-safe" operation. Suitable media are given as m-xylene for temperatures between 90‹ and 132‹ C. and n-butyl alcohol in the temperature range 95‹ to 113‹ C.
