Abstract

1,246,197. Contactless variable resistors. SIEMENS A.G. 16 Dec., 1969 [17 Dec., 1968], No. 61158/69. Heading H1K. A contactless variable resistor comprises a permanent magnet, a disc-shaped armature and a field plate attached to the armature, the magnet being rotatable relative to the armature and field plate. As shown, Fig. 1, a semi-annular permanent magnet 2 is supported above a disc-shaped soft iron armature 1 by a bearing member 3 having a shaft 6 extending through a bore in the armature 1. A field plate 4 is secured to the armature 1 in such a position that it underlies a pole face of the magnet in the position illustrated so that the maximum field is applied to produce the maximum resistance of the field plate. As the magnet is rotated by means of shaft 6 the magnetic field applied decreases until it is substantially zero when the magnet is at right angles to the position shown to produce minimum resistance of the field plate. A sheet metal cover 5 is secured to the edge of the armature 1. Apertures (7, Fig. 2, not shown) are provided in the armature so that a magnetization device may be inserted to adjust the strength of the magnet 2.
