Abstract

1,245,921. Splitting slate. ROBERTSON RESEARCH CO. Ltd., and DINORWIC SLATE QUARRIES CO. Ltd. 26 Sept., 1968 [28 June, 1967], No. 29710/67. Heading B5E. A chisel for splitting slates comprises a first member 1 which has a cutting edge 4 defined by two mutually inclined faces 5, 6 and is slidable within a second member 3 having two inclined faces 7, 8 which in a first relative position of the members form respective continuations of the faces 5, 6 to form a composite chisel blade, and means for advancing the first member relative to the second. The inclined faces subtend an angle of not less than 30 degrees and not more than 135 degrees and preferably 90 degrees. The first member is slidable in a slot in the second member and, in operation, with the first member retracted in the slot, an hydraulic ram 9 moves the chisel into engagement with a piece of slate to be split until the split portions of the slate engage the inclined faces 7, 8 of the second member. Thereafter, hydraulic rams 2 advance the first member 1 at a predetermined speed into the split. In another embodiment, the crosssection of the first member has an arrowheaded cross-section.
