Abstract
124,591. Martin, A. R., and Trammell, J. V. March 30, 1918. Breech actions, sliding breechblock. - Relates to automatic guns of the kind having a tubular magazine arranged below and parallel to the barrel, and a pivoted cartridge lifter, and consists mainly in detail improvements in the cartridge-lifter, breech-block, and firing and safety mechanism. In the construction shown, the cartridges are fed from a tubular magazine 2 on to a pivoted lifter 12 which, when the breech is opened, is raised by a spring 19. The lifter is depressed when the breech closes by an inclined surface 33 on the breech-block acting on a projection 16 on the lifter. The breech-block 22 is provided with two side plates 20, 21, Fig. 4, one 21 of which is detachable, sliding in guides in the barrel and breech-frame. The detachable plate 21 carries the hooked extractor 38. A projection 39 is provided on the face of the breech-block to prevent the cartridgecase from moving sideways and thus becoming disengaged from the extractor. The sear 49 is actuated by a projection 64 on a sliding trigger 56. A sliding spring pawl 65 on the end of the sear allows the trigger to re-engage when released. The firing-spring 52 is mounted on a rod 50 pivoted to the hammer, and at the, rear abuts against a plate 51, the position of which can be adjusted by means of a series of slots 54. The safety mechanism comprises a turn-button device 75, Fig. 8, having a projection 76 adapted to engage a projection 63 on the trigger, and a lever 70 having an upturned end 72 adapted to lock the breech-block. The lever 70 is normally turned into the disengaging position by a projection 74 on the turn-button 75. The side plate 4 of the breech-frame is detachable and is provided with an opening having a hinged door 43 for loading the magazine.
