Abstract

1,245,406. Hydraulic piston. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. 3 Oct., 1968 [5 Oct., 1967], No. 45425/67. Heading F2S. A cylindrical hydraulic piston 10, Fig. 1, has an axial bore 12 which is threaded at 14 to receive a piston-rod 16 therein and which combines with a number of blind branches 18 to define one recess. At least one of the branches 18 is connected by an arcuate passage 20 to an annular groove 22 formed in the rear face of the piston. A disc valve closure member 24 overlies the groove 22 and is spaced from said rear face by a washer 26 having radial peripheral notches 28. The member 24 is urged towards said rear face by a cup spring 30, the latter being retained by a washer 32 and by a circlip 34 which is received in a groove 36 of the piston-rod 16. The latter is provided with a radial bore 40 and an axial bore 42 which facilitate the passage of fluid flow from the rear to the front face of the piston. An end 44 of the piston-rod 16 forms a valve seat for a closure member 46 which is urged by a spring 48 housed in a cap screw 50, the latter being received in the bore 12 of the piston. In use when the piston moves to the right, hydraulic fluid is forced through the passage 20 thus causing the member 24 to lift against the force of the spring 30. Movement of the piston to the left forces hydraulic fluid through the bores 40 and 42 in the piston-rod 16, lifting the valve member 46 from its seat 44 against the force of the spring 48. The notches 28 in the washer serve to allow fluid to pass through the piston in either direction when the force is too small to lift the members 24 or 26. In a modification the closure member 46 is carried on a member 54, Fig. 3 (not shown) which is slidable in an aperture formed in the cap screw 50.
