Abstract

[Also in Division B3] A device for dispensing a coil of strapping comprises a motor 16 coupled to drive a rotatable carrier 28 and control means including a movable sensor 50 for the motor 16. The coil C is positioned in the carrier 28 and the innermost winding of the coil is passed through a tube 72 of the sensor 50. When the strapping is required, tension is applied to the outwardly extending length of the strapping which causes the tube 72 to swing inwardly towards the central arm about a pivotal support 76. As the tube 72 swings inwardly, pin 82 will swing about the pivotal support 76 to engage and close a lever 64 of a switch 48. This actuates the motor 16 which drives a friction wheel 20 to turn the carrier 28 until a sufficient length of the strapping has been obtained, whereupon the tension in the outwardly extending length of the strip will be relieved. Owing to the resilient curvature of the strapping, the tube 72 will swing outwardly towards the innermost winding of the coil C which causes the pin 82 to disengage switch lever 64 and open the switch 48 to stop the motor 16. The rotation of the carrier 28 will be stopped immediately by the frictional drive wheel 20 which serves as a brake.
