A combined boiler and space heater fired by gas or liquid fuel comprises upright panels, spaced apart and interconnected so as to define between them an enclosed combustion chamber adapted to be connected to a balanced flue, a burner or burners in or near the lower part of the combustion chamber and extended-surface tubing disposed in the combustion chamber so as to be heated by the burner or burners and provided with means of connection to flow and return fluid circulation pipes of a circulatory system whichis outside the appliance. Annularly or helically finned water tubes 16 are connected in parallel to flow and return manifolds 17 and heated by a single-nozzle burner 26, the combustion gases being directed by baffles 28 to an outlet 20. Air for combustion is drawn from an inlet 21 via a duct 22 by a centrifugal fan 24 and directed below a baffle 27 to the burner 26. The inlet 21 and outlet 20 are connected to a balanced flue (not shown). The combustion chamber 15 may have a refractory lining. The water tubes 16 may be replaced by a single tube formed into a coil, or may be disposed at a small angle to the horizontal above a rail-type burner. Where the boiler is used both for feeding radiators and for supplying domestic hot water, separate water tubes, each heated by a separate burner in a separate combustion chamber or a separate compartment of a single combustion chamber, may be provided for the two purposes. The combustion chamber or compartment for domestic hot water may be thermally insulated. The boiler heats the space in which it is situated by radiation from the front panel (10) and rear panel 11. These panels may be enclosed by an outer casing, air to be heated being passed through a passage or passages between the outer casing and the panels by natural or forced circulation.
