Abstract

1,244,392. Drying boards. MOORE DRY KILN CO. OF OREGON. 8 Sept., 1969 [20 Sept., 1968], No. 44307/69. Heading F4G. Planar material having a uniform variation in cross-section is heat-treated by passing it through a chamber wherein it is subjected to a plurality of jets of high velocity, high temperature air, there being a reduced number of jets opposed to the relatively thinner portions of said material. Stacks of n gypsum board strip having chamfered edges are dried by being passed through a succession of units each comprising a U-shaped plenum 30 through which air is fed to and from n + 1 air boxes (40, Fig. 4, not shown) having a plurality of nozzles (42). The air is circulated by a turbo-fan 38 and is heated by gas burners 35 before being passed to the air boxes which taper to provide a uniform pressure head along their length. The nozzles (42) increase in length as the air box (40) tapers and are arranged so that adjacent the chamfered edges of the gypsum boards there is a reduced number of nozzles (42). n rollers 18 arranged between the air boxes (40) support and carry the boards through the drier. Successive groups of units form separate zones which may differ in air velocity, temperature and direction of flow from adjacent zones (Fig. 1, not shown).
