Abstract

1,243,787. Melt spinning polyhexamethylene adipamide. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK A.G. 10 Jan., 1969 [11 Jan., 1968], No. 1621/69. Heading B5B. In the melt spinning of polyhexamethylene adipamide by passing it at a temperature of 265‹ to 320‹ C., preferably 280-295‹C., under pressure through distributer pipes and spinnerets the melt is conveyed through the pipes at a velocity of at least 0À35 cm./sec., preferably 0À43 to 1À15 cm./sec. Velocities of up to 2À0 and even up to 6À0 cm./sec. have proved to be suitable. The molecular weight of the polymer may be 12,500 to 18,500 and its relative viscosity 2À1 to 2À8 using a solution containing 1 gram of the polymer per 100 ml. of solution, the solvent being 96% by weight sulphuric acid and the viscosities of the solution and solvent being determined at 25‹ C. The distributer pipes advantageously have a circular crosssection of diameter 0À8 to 1À6 cm. and a length of 150 to 260 cm. The melt is generally forced through the pipes at a gauge pressure of 20 to 100 atmospheres. The passage of the melt through the distributer pipes at a velocity of at least 0À35 cm./sec. prevents decomposition of the polymer and the formation of deposits on the walls of the pipes.
