[Also in Division H2] Electro-slag remelting or refining apparatus comprises a water-cooled mould 11 resting on a copper base 10, the metal billet 9 to be remelted being arranged concentrically in the mould 11, an auxiliary electrode 15, consisting of a number of rods 15<SP>1</SP> secured to a ring 16 surrounding the billet 9, being provided to maintain the slag layer 12 heated whilst a billet is being changed and also to enhance the efficiency of the refining process.
