Abstract

1,242,929. Liquid jet cutting. N. C. FRANZ. 30 May, 1969 [31 May, 1968], No. 27500/69. Heading B5L. [Also in Division B3] The penetration into a workpiece surface of a high velocity liquid jet, e.g. for cutting wood, is increased by dissolving a long chain polymer in the working liquid, so that the viscosity of the liquid at low shear rates is raised to render the jet more cohesive. Solid particles, e.g. glass beads, may be added to the working liquid, which is generally water containing e.g. dissolved polyalkylene oxides, gelatin or methylcellulose polymers, and the polymer may be dissolved in a water-miscible solvent such as a lower alkanol, prior to mixing with the water.
