Abstract
1,242,919. Cobalt base alloys: powder metallurgy. SHERRITT GORDON MINES Ltd. Sept. 22, 1969 [Nov.15, 1968], No. 46600/69. Headings C7A; C7D. A ductile alloy comprises: - Fe 1À5-15% the balance, apart from impurities, being Co; is made by powder metallurgy; has a two phase structure with the Fe distributed unequally therebetween and has a F.C.C. structure because the transformation to H.C.P. is suppressed at room temperature. The alloy may be made by compacting the powders (e.g. by direct powder rolling) preferably with up to 2% of water to improve the compacting characteristics, sintering at 1400‹-1900‹ F. (e.g. in wet flowing hydrogen to remove C and S impurities), hot working with a 20-40% reduction at 1700‹-1900‹ F. (e.g. by extrusion, forging or rolling), annealing at 1200‹ -1800‹ F., cold working with a 20-40% reduction and finally annealing at 1600‹ -1900‹ F. The alloys are readily cold worked to form strip, sheet, wire or tubing, and may be used to make hard-facing welding rods.
