Abstract

1,242,655. Spark gaps. INSTRUMENT AB SCANDITRONIX. 20 June, 1969 [24 June, 1968], No. 31331/69. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H3] A pulse generator (see Division H3) producing a steep-sided pulse for an X-ray tube 11 includes spark gaps 1, 2 triggered by an electrode 5 to discharge energy stored between surrounding plates 3, 4, which may be disc shaped or conical, forming transmission lines 21 and energy storage regions 22 between adjacent plates 3, 4 of adjacent lines 21. Transmission lines 21 are mounted on insulative supports 16, 17, 19. Supports 19 comprise spacer rings 30 of epoxy resin each mounting plates 3, 4 of adjacent lines so that a ring may be added or removed to vary the length of the spark gap chain. Spacers 30 and further spacers 32 are apertured to allow penetration of liquid or gaseous insulation whose pressure may be varied to vary the spark gap breakdown voltage. Alternatively, solid insulation may be used. Spacers 32 and insulation 29 between plates 3, 4 may comprise layers with interposed metal sheets having apertures at their centres. A metal foil 31 is provided on the surface of insulation 29 at the spark gaps. Insulative discs 35 may be disposed in the tranmission lines and may be replaced by discs of varied thickness to vary the spark gap length. Contact strips 33 for the plates are encased in insulation 34 and angularly spaced. Further trigger electrodes operating simultaneously with electrode 5 may be provided (Fig. 4, not shown) where an electrode (39) powered through a coaxial cable (40) is mounted in a metallic spacer (36).
