Abstract

1,242,565. Aluminium fluorides. DAIKIN KOGYO CO. Ltd. 25 Oct., 1968 [26 Oct., 1967 (2)], No. 50683/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C2] Novel crystalline forms of aluminium fluoride designated the # 2 and # 3 forms are characterized by their X-ray diffraction data. The chemical formula of the # 2 form is AlF 3 .O.5H 2 O and that of the # 3 form is AlF 3 . The # 2 and # 3 forms of the fluoride may be derived from a third form of the fluoride designated as the # 1 -form AlF 3 .1-5H 2 O. The # 1 -fluoride is made by evaporation of a hydrofluoric acid solution of aluminium fluoride to dryness at 30‹ to 120‹ C. When the # 1 -fluoride is heated above 120‹ C., then the # 2 -form of the fluoride is gradually formed. On heating the # 2 fluoride above 180‹ C. the # 3 -fluoride begins to form and on heating the # 3 -fluoride above 500‹ C. the known alpha fluoride is formed. The forms of the fluoride which exist when the # 1 -fiuoride is partially converted to the # 2 -form and similarly the # 2 form to the # 3 -form are called "intertransition forms" .
