Abstract

1307993 Aluminium fluoride ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 20 March 1970 [25 March 1969] 15616/69 Heading C1A Aluminium fluoride is produced by scrubbing gases, which contain volatile fluorine compounds, with an aqueous solution containing aluminium fluoride or aluminium fluosilicate, precipitating silica therefrom by the addition of Al(OH) 3 at elevated temperature, cooling to precipitate hydrated AlF 3 and filtering or centrifuging to remove mother liquors. The hydrated AlF 3 may be calcined to obtain anhydrous aluminium fluoride. The gases which contain volatile fluorine compounds may be evolved as by-products in the-concentration of wet process phosphoric acid. The scrubbing of gases is preferably carried out at temps. in the range 23-95‹ C. while precipitation of silica is achieved at a temperature of not less than 100‹ C. and the precipitation of aluminium fluoride at not more than 92‹ C. by seeding with hydrated AlF 3 crystals. Part of the scrubber liquor may be recycled, without prior treatment, after dilution with part of the mother liquor from the crystallization of AlF 3 .
