Abstract

1,241,991. Coated metal. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 8 Jan., 1969 [16 Jan., 1968], No. 2407/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] A metal article or metal-surfaced article is coated by a process in which the article is treated with an aqueous acidic dispersion or solution of a film-forming material stabilised by an anionic surfactant and substantially free from non-ionic surfactant, the dispersion or solution containing a depolarising oxidant and attacking the surface of the article, whereby ions are generated adjacent the surface which cause the dispersion to coagulate thereon. Preferably at least part of the surface consists of iron, zinc or an alloy thereof, which may be modified by formation of e.g. a zinc phosphate or iron phosphate coating. Specified film-forming materials are copolymers of butadiene with styrene and/or methyl methacrylate and homopolymers or copolymers of vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride or vinyl acetate. In the examples, panels of zinc or degreased steel are immersed in dispersion comprising methyl methacrylate/ 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate/vinyl acetate copolymer, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate, hydrogen peroxide, or sodium nitrate, and phosphoric acid or acetic acid, rinsed with water and dried.
