Abstract

1366417 Coating metals by polymerisation TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 10 Aug 1972 [11 Aug 1971] 37377/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A polymer is formed as a coating on a metal surface by immersion of the metal in an aqueous solution containing one or more monomers, a hydrophilic organic solvent to solubilise the monomer(s), a polymerisation initiator and an organic or inorganic acid capable of releasing metal ions from the surface. In the examples various mixtures of monomers selected from acrylonitrile, acrylamide, methyl and ethyl acrylates, N,N'- methylene bisacrylamide, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and methyl vinyl ketone are used. The metal may be mild steel, zinc, copper or lead and may be prepared by electrolytic or solvent degreasing: in one example a mild steel plate is rinsed with water, degreased by electrolysis in aqueous sodium orthosilicate, rinsed, neutralized with 15% HCl and rinsed again. Acids exemplified for use in the polymerisation mixture are sulphuric, hydrochloric, nitric, formic, acetic, n-butyric, acrylic, succinic, adipic, maleic and trimesic.
