Abstract

Compn. for coating metals by electrolytic deposition comprises (1) a water soluble copolymer (I) obtained by partial or complete neutralisation, with ammonia or an amine, of an copolymer of intrinsic viscosity 0.006-0.030 comprising 40-10 moles % of unsaturated carboxylic acid (II) and 60-90 moles % of a vinyl monomer (III) containing an acrylic or methacrylic acid ester, (2) water, and (3) 0.05-10 p.b. wt. of a water soluble chromic acid salt per 100 p.b. wt. of (I). Pref. (II) is acrylic or methacrylic acid, or contains one of these as its main component. Pref. a art of (III), pref. 2-20 moles %, is a hydroxyacrylate or hydroxymethacrylate. Coating has excellent adhesion to metal and high resistance to corrosion.
