A coating composition for metal surfaces comprises in an aqueous solution, a watersoluble ammonium salt of a water-insoluble acrylic polymer containing free carboxyl groups which, on drying, is rendered water-insoluble, and a corrosion-inhibiting additive which is a nitrite, phosphate, alkali metal silicate, chromate or dichromate. In the example, a copper surface is coated with a composition comprising a solution of an ammonium salt of an acrylic polymer (a mixture of acrylates and an unsaturated carboxylic acid) and potassium dichromate. After drying, the coated surface exhibited a high resistance to corrosion.
