Abstract
570,054. Preventing corrosion. HIGH DUTY ALLOYS, Ltd., and WHITBY, L. Nov. 10, 1943, No. 18667. [Class 123 (i)] [Also in Group III] Metal surfaces, especially magnesium and aluminium base alloys are protected by chemically or electro-chemically forming an absorbent coating to serve as a porous matrix and precipitating a sparingly soluble chromate, e.g. zinc chromate, in the matrix by a double decomposition reaction, using solutions of chromate or dichromate and of a salt of the metal whose chromate is required. The metal with the absorbent coating is dipped into a boiling sodium chromate, rinsed and then immersed into a boiling solution of a soluble salt (other than chloride) of zinc, barium, calcium or strontium. Basic chromates may be similarly formed. The metal may be redipped and finally coated with a clear varnish. Specification 543,726, (Group XXXVI], is referred to.
