In a copying machine as described in the parent Specification, in which a copy sheet moving along a path 25 Fig. 2 after developing is heated by an infrared unit 37 moving between positions 50, 50<SP>1</SP> at a speed slower than the sheet, the unit 37 may be retracted to a safety position 50<SP>11</SP> where a heat shield 150 protects the copy sheet. During operation, a rotating cam 54 pivots a lever 121 which, through a latch 122, pivots a crank 67 to move pulleys 72, 73, thus moving a cord 75 fixed at points 89 to the unit 37. If a fault occurs, e.g. the copy sheet is not detected at the output, a solenoid 131 swings the latch 122 anti-clockwise disengaging its step 124 from a lip 125 on the crank 67 thus allowing the crank to be pivoted by a spring 69 to move the unit 37 to position 50<SP>11</SP>. The mechanism is re-set on further rotation of cam 54. A step 126 in the latch 122 engages the lip 125 and pivots the crank 67 anti-clockwise where it is held by a member 134 abutting a pin 147 while the latch 122 pivots down again so that its step 124 can re-engage the lip 125. The heating unit may be used to evaporate solvent from and/or dry sheets in liquid developing apparatus.
