Abstract

A method of preparing pieces of wood in readiness for joining them end to end comprises assembling the pieces of wood in parallel on a work-table 12, with their leading ends 31 flush, profiling the ends 31 by moving a milling cutter 16 or the like past the ends, conveying the pieces to an adjacent table 38 on which their rear ends 39 are aligned, profiling the ends 39 by the milling cutter or the like, and applying glue to the profiled front and/or rear ends. In apparatus described for performing the method each piece of wood is fed to a saw 2, which squares its leading end and cuts out any flaws and then is advanced by a conveyer 4 to a stop 5. When the piece of wood contacts the stop 5 a cylinder 6 is actuated which pushes the piece, against the action of a counter cylinder 11 onto an assembly table 8. When a pack of pieces is assembled on table 8 the pack is moved on to the work-table 12 and then advanced in the direction of arrow 15 until the ends 31 lie in the working plane of the cutter 16. The cutter 16 moves in the direction of arrow 17 to position 32 and forms prongs or a chamfer on ends 31. Cutter discs and/or saws 18, 19 in front of, and/or behind the cutter 16, or variably spaced cutter discs 20 remove waste and trim the prongs. An apparatus 40 may apply glue to the cut ends 31. A bracket 33 then advances to push the pieces on to the adjacent table 38 with their ends 39 flush. Springs bear down on the pieces to ensure that the shorter pieces are not carried along with the larger ones by friction during this movement. The cutter 16 is then moved again to cut the ends 39 and the apparatus 40 moves to apply glue thereto. Alternatively the apparatus 40 is stationary and applies glue to the ends 39 as the pieces are moved on to a table 44. The direction of this movement, arrow 42, is at a small angle to the direction of movement 17 of cutter 16 so that the pieces do not again contact the cutter. The prepared pieces are fed in turn from table 44 by a conveyer 46 into a press 45 where they are assembled into an endless strip. A contact 60 ensures that the conveyer 46 only moves when there is a piece of wood to be moved into the press.
