Abstract

1,240,928. Pyridine bases. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 June, 1970 [9 July, 1969], No. 34580/69. Heading C2C. Pyridine bases are prepared by reacting acrolein with ammonium ions in the liquid phase under acidic conditions. The ammonium ions are preferably introduced in the form of an ammonium salt, e.g. the acetate, sulphate, nitrate or a halide. They may also be introduced in the form of gaseous ammonia, ammonia solution or as a hydrolysable amide, e.g. formamide or urea. The reaction may also contain acetaldehyde and if this is present it is preferred to carry out the reaction in the presence of molecular oxygen and in the presence of ions of a metal of variable valency, e.g. cupric or ferric ions. The reaction medium may also comprise water, an organic solvent and/or an alkanoic acid containing up to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group. The products comprise pyridine and methyl pyridines.
