Abstract

1,240,421. Pipe couplings. J. E. WEBJORN. 5 Feb., 1970 [6 Feb., 1969], No. 5562/70. Heading F2G. In a high-pressure pipe coupling, a socket 17 surrounds, with slight clearance, a spigot 15 and a sleeve 25 attached to the spigot; an annular groove 33 between opposed faces 35, 37 of the spigot and sleeve contains an elastic sealing ring 39 and a backing ring 41 of harder material. The sealing ring 39 is a rubber 0-ring and the backing ring 41 is of square cross-section and made of P.T.F.E. The sleeve 25 has a reduced portion forming the bottom of the groove 33 and also fitting in an enlarged bore 30 of the spigot 15, the sleeve and spigot being held together by cement. The spigot 15 and sleeve 25 are held inside the socket 17 by a threaded sleeve 23 mating with the outside of the socket. The spigot 15 and socket 17 are welded to pipes at their outer ends.
