Abstract

Carbonizing-furnaces.-Coal or other bituminous or organic material to be carbonized is spread in a thin layer on trays carried round horizontally by a rotating frame within a gas-tight casing. The trays 10 are mounted in a frame 3 carried by a vertical shaft 4 passing through a gas-tight bland 6 into a closed casing 2. The casing 2 is enclosed within a chamber 1 and is supported in such a manner that the products of combustion of the heating- burners, which are arranged to render the inner surface of the dome of the chamber incandescent, may have. access to the whole of its surface. Material is fed on to the trays through a hopper 17, the lower edge of which acts to spread out the material into a uniform layer. The speed of rotation is such that carbonization is completed in rather less than one revolution. The trays 10 are pivoted on radial rods 11 and are arranged to tend to hang vertically. They are kept horizontal by rollers 12 bearing against a rail 13. When the tray reaches the discharging position, the roller 12 comes to a gap in the rail. The coke &c. is discharged through crushing rollers 19 into a gas-tight shoot 20. The tray is then automatically restored to the horizontal position and passes under the feeding hopper 17. Gases or steam may he fed into the casing 2. Gases are withdrawn through pipes 27.
