Abstract
1,240,286. Valves. PHYSICS INTERNATIONAL CO. 27 Sept., 1968 [27 Sept., 1967], No. 46110/68. Heading F2V. [Also in Divisions F1, G3 and H2] A fuel-injection valve is controlled by an electro-expansive body 54, Fig. 3, such as a piezo-electric element, having a surface 56 for transmitting the movement of the body through a non-compressible fluid in a chamber 58 to a smaller surface 60. The latter forms part of a pilot valve which allows pressurized fuel to flow through passages 62, 64 to lift a plunger 86 and the valve 76 against a spring-load 78. The fuel beneath the plunger escapes through passages 66, 90 when the pilot valve returns to its original position and the actuating time of the valve is proportional to the magnitude of the electric signal applied to the body 54. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the pilot valve 100 opens to operate a differential piston 108, 114 which applies an increased pressure to a downwardly facing conical surface on the injector valve 120. One-way fuel flow into the passage between the differential piston and the injector valve is provided by a spring-loaded valve 126. In a further modification, the differential piston is omitted and the pilot valve is arranged centrally and constructed so that its downward movement first applies an upward pressure equal to the spring-loading on the injector valve before pressurized fuel is admitted to lift the latter. A central exhaust passage may be provided through the pilot valve so that the injector valve can be lifted more rapidly against its spring. The surface of the electro-expansive body may act through the non-compressible fluid on a plunger secured to the injector valve, the pilot valve being omitted, and as shown in Fig. 7, the body 180 may be cylindrical and force fluid through passages 192, 194 to lift a plunger 196. The valve may also be constructed so that the number of fuel injection parts uncovered is proportional to the voltage applied to the electroexpansive body. A further construction in which the closure member consists of two coaxial members operated in succession by separate electroexpansive bodies permits flow durations of 100 microseconds to be achieved.
