Abstract

1,240,251. Making grids. SONY CORP. 13 Jan., 1969 [11 Jan., 1968 (2)], No. 1869/69. Heading B3A. [Also in Division H1] In a grid adapted for use adjacent the screen of a colour television tube and comprising grid elements 24, Fig. 11, stretched between opposed arms 21A and 21B, distortion due to thermal expansion is minimized by supporting the arms 21A and 21B at points B A , B<SP>1</SP> A , B B , B<SP>1</SP> B spaced from the end of the arms by 0À223 of the length of the arms. In Fig. 11, the arms 21 are of square cross-section and are supported by C- shaped braces 22A and 22B which are stressed in the direction of the grid elements. A damping wire 25 may extend over the grid elements between resilient supports 26 on the braces 22 to prevent vibration; the wire is preferably of tungsten or stainless steel 30-50 microns in diameter. As shown, the damping wire is parallel to the line scanning direction, but it is preferably inclined 30-45 degrees to this direction. A metal plate is etched to form elongate apertures, and slits parallel to the apertures are cut in the edges of the plate to form tabs. These tabs are stretched at predetermined tensions between opposed chucks and support bars such as 21, Fig. 11, are welded to the sheet, after which the projecting parts of the plate are cut off.
