Abstract

1,239,855. Liquid injectors for medical respirators. PYE Ltd. 27 Nov., 1969 [30 Jan., 1969], No. 5108/69. Heading A5T. A liquid injector for a medical respirator for injecting a predetermined quantity of liquid into a stream of gas which is passed to a patient, comprises a housing, a first member having a bore therein and being movable with respect to the housing, a second member movable with respect to the first member to provide an adjustable space within the bore, and means for supplying liquid to the space such that the two members are movable to interrupt the liquid supply to the space and to connect the space to the gas stream. In an embodiment, liquid flows in a cavity 60, and a cylinder 66 is engageable with a seat 68 to enclose liquid therein. Piston 72 is movable to discharge the enclosed liquid through a valve 71 into gas flowing in pipe 20. Cylinder 66 is moved by pneumatically operated driving rod 84 acting through arms 81 and flange 66A. A piston 78 in a cylinder 76 into which compressed air may flow through port 77 to drive piston 78, is rigidly linked to piston 72 by rods 74 and 75. Adjustable member 80 determines the position of projection 80B which controls the limit of travel of piston 78 and hence the volume of liquid ejected into the gas stream. In another embodiment (Fig. 4 not shown), cylinder 76 is adjustable to vary the starting position of plunger 78 and hence plunger 72, to vary the volume of liquid enclosed in cylinder 66. Cylinder 66 is moved by means of compressed air fed through a port (97).
