A method of manufacturing a coat comprises the steps of fixing a plain tape 16 face-to-face with the non-adhesive face of an adhesive tape 17, thermally adhering the compound tape to the inner surface of the coat cloth 21 so that the compound tape's edges are parallel to the cloth's terminal edge and so that the distance from the adhesive tape's lower edge to the plain tape's upper edge equals the distance from the adhesive tape's lower edge to the cloth's terminal edge, folding the cloth over the compound tape so that the cloth's terminal edge is level with the plain tape's upper edge 18, placing a lining (25) so that it overlaps the cloth's folded edge 27 and terminates with an edge level with the level edges of the plain tape and cloth, seaming the three level edges, and folding the lining about a fold edge 26 located above the cloth's fold edge so that the lining extends upwardly to cover the seam joining the three level edges. The compound tape is made by securing the plain and adhesive tapes together along a line of stitching 20 parallel to the tape edges such that the upper edges 18, 19 of the two tapes are level. The level edges of the plain tape, cloth and lining are secured by a line of overlock stitching 29, a further line of stitching 30 being formed parallel to and spaced from the overlock stitching.
