Abstract

1,239,436. Carboxylic acid esters. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 13 Dec., 1968 [14 Dec., 1967], No. 69323/68. Heading C2C. Carboxylic acid esters are produced by reacting an alcohol or an enolizable aldehyde or ketone with a ketene in the presence of at least one oxide selected from oxides of metals of Groups I B , II B , IV B , V B , VII B , III A , IV A or VA of the Periodic System, Mg, Ca, Si, Fe, Co, Ni and Cr as catalyst. The reaction is preferably conducted in an inert solvent using ketene itself. In the examples ethylene glycol mono methyl ether is reacted with ketene to yield glycol monomethyl ether acetate using as catalyst any of the following: CuO, Bi 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , V 2 O 5 , SnO, CoO 3 , MgO, ZnO, MnO, CaO, In 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 or Fe 2 O 3 and SiO 2 .
