Abstract
1415636 Methyl and ethyl acrylates and methacrylates SOC ITALIANA RESINE SIR SpA 30 April 1974 [11 May 1973] 18967/74 Heading C2C Methyl or ethyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid are prepared by reacting acrolein or methacrolein with oxygen or gases containing free oxygen and methanol or ethanol in the gas phase and in the presence of a catalyst having the general formula or or where Me denotes a chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, silver, cadmium, gold, mercury, sodium, barium, calcium, cerium, bismuth, thorium, uranium, lead, antimony, tin, phosphorus or boron atom, a has a value of from 6 to 12, b has a value of from 1 to 6, c has a value of from 0 to 5, d has a value of from 1 to 6, x has a value of from 20À5 to 58À5, y has a value of from 21 to 61À5, and z has a value of from 23À5 to 76À5. The catalysts may be used supported for example on silica, alumina, magnesia, titania or ziroonia, and may be used in fixed, moving or fluid bed. Inert gaseous diluents (e.g. nitrogen, carbon dioxide or steam) may be present. If the amount of alcohol is less than that required to form ester, a mixture of free acid and ester may be obtained. A gas mixture containing acrolein or methacrolein obtained by the catalytic oxidation of propylene or isobutene may be used with alcohol, and possible oxygen, added.
